Police are urging parents to pick up a child ID kit before your kids head outside and off to camp for summer break.

The free kits at the Decatur Police Department include an inkless fingerprint kit, a cotton swab for DNA, and information about where medical records can be found. More than 400,000 children are reported missing every year, according to the FBI.

Decatur Police officials say having these kits makes it easier for them to start the investigation.

“It does speed up the process and we never want to think about those worst-case scenarios, but our mind is usually somewhere else,” said Emme Long with DPD. “So this helps you kind of just get that information you might need right along where it’s supposed to go.”
