Cold weather and winter storms lead to blood shortage

Cold temperatures and winter weather can cause disruption in the blood supply. LifeSouth urges dnew and previous donors to help reduce the risk of a blood shortage. All blood types are needed, including platelet and plasma donors.

According to LifeSouth, donating in advance of potential weather issues, including extreme cold like most of the country is experiencing, ensures that blood will be available to local hospitals and patients when it’s needed. Weather events can cause a double hit to blood supplies, as the number of donations decreases and the need for blood due to emergencies rises.

Donors must be 17 or older, or 16 with parental permission, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good health. A photo ID is also needed. Call LifeSouth’s toll-free number, 1-888-795-2707 or visit to find the closest blood drive or location near you.

LifeSouth is a non-profit community blood center serving hospitals in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.
