Construction to widen Cecil Ashburn Drive begins tomorrow and is expected to last 18 months. Thousands of drivers will be impacted by the closure, and one church is bracing for the impact.
Today was the last Sunday for members of the Southeast Church of the Nazarene to take the Cecil Ashburn route to attend worship at their church.
Ten months is how long city officials say Cecil Ashburn will be closed before opening back up to two-lane traffic. Members of the church will have to wait an extra 8 months before they see the benefit of the complete construction.
Pastor Byron Brown says he thinks the road closure may mean fewer people in the pews.
“We’ve got a large percentage of people that will be having to face the challenges of making the different alternate routes to get here,” said Pastor Byron.
He says the church members are loyal and hope they will continue to come every Sunday despite the longer travel time.
