Boys and Girls Clubs graduates head to college

Young people in the Valley are inspiring kids even younger than themselves by proving you can go to college no matter where you come from.

Twenty-two kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Alabama are graduating high school and going to college. They celebrated at the Club at Cavalry Hills.

“Growing up in a single home and my mom was at work, the Boys and Girls Club gave me a second home,” said Levon Fletcher. “And it just set a foundation based off of hard work, respect for others.”

Fletcher is the Club’s Youth of the Year to represent Huntsville. It’s an award he does not take lightly.

“Now I have to step into the leadership role and make sure I’m doing the right thing all the time because all these people are looking at me now,” he said.

Fletcher says at a young age at the Club he understood the value of hard work and that his dreams could be reality.

“They were teaching us how to stay focused like in school even when you’re not in school,” he continued. “There’s always a mission.”

That mindset, according to the president of the organization, is everything.

“We understand to get kids out of poverty they have to be educated,” said Patrick Wynn, President of the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Alabama.

Wynn says exposure to the possibilities is the first step toward seeking that education.

“We take trips to college, to universities. The biggest thing we try to do is get them exposed to what it’s like to be on a college campus and let them know that it’s obtainable,” Wynn said. “Even though nobody in their family may have ever attended college, they can attend college.”

As for Fletcher, this is just the beginning.

“I’m known as the Boys and Girls Clubs Youth of the Year so that’s something I have to carry on throughout my life and hopefully I make everybody proud,” he said.

Fletcher is going to Troy University in the fall. He plans to study business and finance, maybe to become a banker. But that part is still unwritten.
