Bob Jones recognized for being one of the safest schools in Alabama

One Madison School is being honored for safety, while the City school district says this is only the beginning of keeping your kids safe.

Bob Jones High School is being recognized by Attorney General Steve Marshall, for its commitment to keeping its students safe. The Attorney General awarded Bob Jones with the Alabama Safe School Initiative Award of Excellence for the second year in a row.

“In order to provide the best environment for the kids, it starts with safety. Safety first, then once we’re at the foundation of safety, then we move on to culture and instruction,” said Sylvia Lambert Bob Jones Principal.

Marshall says having SROs on campus and the text-to-protect number, distinguished Bob Jones from other schools.

“When we combine the appearance of law enforcement here, School Resource officers doing an excellent job with technology, Bob Jones is one of the best of the best,” Marshall said.

Even with those measures in place, Madison City Schools is taking safety one step further. In the wake of the parkland school shooting the system launched its School Safety and Security Fund, to hire additional mental health counselors and SROs for next school year.

“It would be our dream that every school have an SRO, our secondary schools do have that, our elementary schools do not at this time,” Lambert added.

The AG said in light of recent events, school leaders should be reminded of how serious the safekeeping of our children is.

“I think it’s obviously critical, parents need to have an understanding that when their children arrive in school that there’s a plan in place to make sure their kids are safe, or teachers that they understand that the instructional environment is one where they’re not going to be worried about potential threats,” Marshall continued.

Madison City Schools is also working on putting together a Safety & Security Committee that will review and revise the security plan for schools.
