No. 6 seed Auburn rallied to avoid an upset against No. 11 seed Alabama as the Tigers defeated their in-state rival 53-52 in the second round of the 2019 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament. It was Auburn’s third win over Alabama this season.

Alabama had an opportunity to tie the game on the final possession, but Cierra Johnson’s 3-point attempt was off the mark and time ran out on the Crimson Tide.

The game was close throughout, with Alabama leading the majority of the way until Auburn assembled its comeback with a 19-14 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter. Auburn kept itself in the game with disruptive defense, finally breaking through for the go-ahead basket with 5:39 left to play.

Shaquera Wade shouldered the load offensively for Alabama, scoring 19 points, while Johnson chipped in 17. Janiah McKay set the high mark for Auburn with 12 points.

Only three Alabama players scored in the first half, but the Crimson Tide still carried a four-point lead into the break. Johnson and Wade combined for 21 of Alabama’s 27 points, while Auburn saw even scoring across the board, with seven different Tigers tallying at least three points.

Auburn advances to face No. 3 seed Texas A&M in the quarterfinals on Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET.
