Investigators are being pretty tight-lipped about a deadly fire in Athens.

It happened early this morning on Airfield Rd.

A 38-year-old woman was found dead in a detached garage.

Her cause of death is unknown at this time and the Athens Police Chief, Floyd Johnson is clearing rumors.

Hours passed after this morning’s fire and you could still smell the smoke, but looking at the front of this house you would not know someone died in a fire here.

“Well we come out and it was just flames, just flames, ” said Willie Tucker.

Those flames were isolated to a garage behind the house, it’s where firefighters found a woman’s body.

“Oh no and then I thought about Mr. and Mrs. Williams, that’s the one’s that live over there, ” said Tucker.

The Williams live here and family tells us, the woman found was their nephew’s girlfriend.

She had only been in the area for a short time and was originally from Florida.

“Chad said no, said his girlfriend was in there asleep, ” said Tucker.

Word spread quickly in this small community.

Neighbors, friends and family, wondered if the woman was murdered, but police say that’s not likely.

“At this time from what we’re understanding from our interviews, also from the physical evidence on the scene, the probability of this being an accidental fire is high, ” said Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson.

While the cause is said to be unclear at this time, Athens Fire and Police reinforced the importance of Space Heaters and safety during the winter.

“Every time that we have a cold snap like this, that’s the fear that we have, ” said Athens Fire and Rescue Chief Brian Thorton.

As for the family living in the home, they were working on restoring power back to their home after this morning’s tragedy.

The fire and death investigation have been turned over to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
