Athens man accused of killing 79-year-old mother will go before grand jury


An Athens man accused of killing his 79-year-old mother had his preliminary hearing today.

47-year-old Sean Sutton is charged with the murder of his mother Emma Sutton. An Athens Police detective said in his testimony that the victim had been dead for about 12-24 hours, before a family friend found her body in her kitchen, at the Roberts Apartment on Malone Street on Nov. 21. 

The detective said Emma Sutton had a hole in her head and a broken cast iron skillet was found at the crime scene. An autopsy report revealed she died of from blunt force trauma to the head. Police arrested Sean Sutton several blocks away from his mother’s apartment. They said he had her cell phone, credit card and keys.

The case will now go before a grand jury.
