One person could be facing a capital murder charge as police investigate a fire that killed a woman in Morgan County early Tuesday morning.

A seven-year old girl and her grandmother were hurt and taken to Huntsville Hospital and the child's mother was killed. This happened on Ryan Road in Joppa.

Community members tell WZDX News the person of interest in custody is a juvenile. Morgan County Sheriff Ana Franklin said the person of interest is in custody on unrelated charges.

Franklin will not release information about the person of interest and victim for legal reasons.

"Legally I can't comment on that because it would lead you to know who that person was," she said.

What they need to know now is how the fire started.

"We're trying to gain as much information and insight as we can and we won't really know anything or be able to go forward with this until the State Fire Marshal has determined a cause," Franklin said.

When firefighters arrived the home was up in flames. One neighbor told WZDX News he knew things were bad when he saw the yellow crime tape.

"It's devastating because the family has moved here and family members been coming to church," said a family friend. "So it's hard when you know there's a death in the family. This is a tight-knit community and we take care of our own. It's just gonna be a difficult time for everybody."

This woman said community members are already volunteering to help.

"I've got clothes in the car right now for family members," she said. "We'll take care of them."

She said businesses in the area are taking donations for the little girl and her grandmother.
