WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A husband and father died at Huntsville Hospital Monday after he was bitten by a copperhead snake at the family’s Smith Lake property in Walker County last week.

According to officials at Huntsville Hospital, 52-year-old Oliver Baker passed away Monday after being hospitalized for several days.

Baker was known as ‘Chum’ and was “loved by everyone,” his brother Reb told CBS 42.

Chum Baker lived with his family in Tuscaloosa and was visiting the family’s lake property when the incident happened.

According to Reb Baker, his brother was walking around with a new dog when he was bitten near the back door.

Reb Baker explained that he tried to do mouth-to-mouth while paramedics rushed to the scene.

The 52-year-old was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Jasper. Reb Baker said his brother went into cardiac arrest and had to be stabilized before being airlifted to Huntsville.

Baker leaves behind a wife and two children. Funeral arrangements are still in the works.
