Stephens Gap Cave temporarily closes after most recent death

Local News

Two people have died since April in Stephens Gap Cave in Woodville.

A cave in Jackson County is temporarily closing after two recent deaths.

Leaders with the Southeastern Cave Conservancy say they are closing Stephens Gap Cave at least through next month.

They say they are doing this out of respect to the family of Phillip Whitehead, who died rappelling in the cave just over a week ago.

They will also evaluate current visitation guidelines and may develop new ones.

The latest the cave will reopen is on September 20th.
