Sod farm in Cullman County left in shambles after severe weather

Severe weather left this sod farm in shambles at Gold Ridge, on County Road 1519.

CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. — Severe weather left one sod farm in shambles. So far, The National Weather Service confirmed two EF-1 tornados in Cullman County. Our WZDX News reporter has more details on the damaged sod farm and spoke with neighbors who live nearby.

"It was pretty scary. About 7:07, I was outside on the back porch and I felt just the pressure of the storm, and all of a sudden you could just hear tin just going everywhere, and powerlines. It was pretty crazy," says Gold Ridge Resident, Rocky Wren.

Wren lives just yards away from the Hunter Sod Farm. The farm gutted out, debris scattered, and some hanging from trees.

Last night the Gold Ridge Volunteer Fire Department surveyed the damage, and thankfully reported no injuries. Wren says he's lived in Cullman County all his life and hasn't seen anything this bad in years.

"2011, April. 27th. It was pretty bad," says Wren. Wren says his home did feel the impact last night.

"It got my barn a little bit, we lost a couple trees, a few pieces of tin, but you know, that's to be expected. We're blessed," says Wren.

However, Wren says he used to it and he and his neighbors pitch in when help is needed. "Preventative maintenance, you gotta make sure everything's down tight. That's basically all you can do. You know you live in "Tornado Alley" here, so that's about all you can expect.

"Yeah, we try to help each other. We've been out here picking up tin all day and making sure everybody's good," says Wren.

Gold Ridge Volunteer Fire Department crews said that there were damages reported in other areas including Fairview, not too far from here in Gold Ridge. There were reports of downed power lines and also other farms that experienced damage.
