Senior Pastor Travis Collins said, “In so many ways, the mosaic is representative of our community. Countless individual pieces, each unique, each weathered, but that all come together to form a beautiful image of inspiration.”

You can have your own piece of the mosaic as replacement work begins on May 23rd.

First Baptist Church Huntsville will be giving away 500 of the small glass tiles from the original mosaic on Tuesday, May 23 from 6-8 p.m.  Recipients will be offered a chance to become a part of the new mosaic’s story by having their picture taken in front of iconic Cosmic Christ installation.

Cosmic Christ is nearly 50 feet high and 154 feet long, dedicated in 1974 and made up of more than 1.4 mission pieces. The original design and fabrication were by stained glass artist Gordon William Smith.

The new mosaic is an ambitious, long-term project. It will be made up of more than 4.3 million blown glass tiles and nearly 1,000 colors, to be installed in phases over the next five years.

“The mosaic is important to both our community and our congregation,” said Senior Pastor Travis Collins.  “But our Church’s mission and purpose are far more than a mosaic. We’ve said we’d like for the work on the mosaic to serve as a celebration and a way to learn. We believe this event will begin that celebration.”

Collins said he’d like for the 500 people accepting the small tiles to come together as a community to not only support the mosaic project but also to support First Baptist’s mission.

“The mosaic is a beautiful celebration of Christ, but it’s what happens behind it, it’s the compassion and love our congregation gives to the community that is the best celebration. We’re at our best when we come together to make a positive impact in our community and want to invite them to be a part of that celebration.”

First Baptist Church Huntsville’s commitment to the community includes work for and with the Christian Women’s Job Corps, English As A Second Language classes, Huntsville Assistance Program, Lakewood Elementary School, Faith Community Nursing, Night to Shine sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, Downtown Rescue Mission, Community Free Dental Clinic, Lincoln Village Ministries, and many others.
