An elderly woman was found dead inside a burning home in DeKalb County Tuesday morning.

Eight hours after this home on County Road 386 was engulfed in flames, firefighters continue to put out hot spots.

“About 9:15am we got a call that there was a house fire on County Road 386 in the Aroney community in our county, and there was a possibility of a body in the home,” said Chief Deputy Michael Edmonson with The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, several fire departments had already been on scene and found an elderly woman dead inside the home. Authorities are not releasing the name of the woman at this time.

“One of the fire departments went in the home while it was actually on fire and took her out of the home,” Edmonson said.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. “The fire was still actually burning there while we were there on scene, so we’ll wait for tomorrow to go back or this afternoon later on, to go inside the residence and see if we can figure out where the fire started,” Edmonson explained.

No one else was inside the home at the time of the fire. Investigators say the timing of this death makes it even harder for loved ones to deal with.

“Thanksgiving, the holidays coming up, it’s really tough, it’s tough to lose a family member anytime but right now especially, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family,” expressed Edmonson.

The fire is being investigated by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
