The start of a new school year is upon us, but your student doesn’t have to attend their first day of classes in an actual school building. That’s because virtual public school is an option for students. Students in Alabama can attend public school from home through Connections Academy, a virtual public school for students across Alabama grades k-12. It’s accredited and tuition free.
Stephanie Adams teaches 6th graders social studies at Connections Academy, connecting with them virtually for each lesson. She’s been teaching at Connections since it first started in 2017.
“I work at home each day, and each day I have tasks that are still geared toward speaking and meeting with students,” said Adams, who communicates with students over the phone and through live lesson sessions.
“There are a variety of reasons students come to our school. Some of our students are professional athletes, some of our student’s families are facing disabilities or physical illnesses that make it much more difficult for them to be in a traditional bricks and mortar setting,” said Adams.
Even though classes meet online, Adams says students also have the opportunity to socialize with each other via live lessons or working face to face together in a lab.
“Last year, we went to the Birmingham Zoo, the US Space and Rocket Center, the Tuskegee Airman Museum, and various locations,” she said.
“We also, as a public school in Alabama, have in person state testing in the spring.”
Adams says students can still do extra curricular activities at Connections Academy.
“Whether its a music club, an art club, National Junior Honor Society, National Honor Society, Robotics — those things are still offered to each of our students,” she said.
The first day of classes is Monday.
