Valentine’s Day could add fuel to mental health issues

Hearts and flowers are just about everywhere you look. But, with all the expectations placed on the holiday, some may battle issues with depression or anxiety.

Tomorrow is a day of love millions of people are anticipating… But, Valentine’s Day could spark mental health issues in millions more.

Hearts and flowers are just about everywhere you look. But, with all the expectations placed on the holiday, some may battle issues with depression or anxiety. 

As Valentine’s Day arrives, Seasonal Affective Disorder is already in effect for many.

Some reports say, suicide hotlines can receive twice as many calls on Valentine’s Day.

Local counselors say it’s important for everyone to remember it’s just another day.

We met up with Monretta Vega, a Counselor at Huntsville Psychotherapy and Counseling Services. She tells our reporter, “Just because you’re in a relationship, doesn’t mean you’re going to be happy. Just because tomorrow is valentine’s day, doesn’t mean you’ll feel loved. So you want to kind of continue on and do your own self-evaluation and get what you need.”

Those who are feeling anxious about Valentine’s Day should consider spending time with friends or family, going out and doing an activity you love, and maybe staying off of social media for the day. Monretta Vega tells us, comparing yourself to the images online could be misleading and damaging.
