COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WZDX) – East and westbound lanes of Highway 72 were closed at Natchez Trace Thursday morning because of a truck fire.

According to Colbert County EMA, HAZMAT crews were on the scene along with firefighters. Officials say nearly 7,000 pounds of flammable resin solution and sodium metasilicate were on the road, covering about 1,500 feet. Firefighters put foam on the chemicals to put out the fire. The fire was extinguished around 8 a.m.

Several people in the area were evacuated as a result.

The fire started around 2 a.m. with multiple explosions. One of the explosions went about 40 feet in the air, according to officials. No injuries were reported.

The Alabama Department of Transportation placed detour signs on both Highway 43 and 72. Traffic was delayed throughout much of the morning.
