SMITHS STATION, Ala. – Three people have been arrested for aggravated child abuse after investigators discovered children living at a residence in South Alabama had been locked in cages on multiple occasions.

Investigators with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check Monday, Jan. 13, at a residence in the 5000 block of Lee County Rd. 246 in Smiths Station, near Dykes Towing, after they received information about a possible child abuse situation.

When investigators arrived at the residence, they made contact with four children, ages 3, 4, 10, and 11-years-old. Investigators say they found two wood constructed cages with hasps and locks on them, and also found evidence that the children had been locked in those cages on multiple occasions. Investigators learned a fifth child, an 8-month-old, also lived at the residence but wasn’t currently there.
