Suspect named in officer-involved shooting

A suspect has been named and charged in Monday afternoon's officer-involved shooting in Huntsville.

A suspect has been named and charged in Monday afternoon’s officer-involved shooting in Huntsville.

Archie Lee Hamlet III, 40, has been charged with 2nd Degree Assault following a physical confrontation with a Huntsville Police Officer.

It began around 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 22, near Wilkenson Drive and Meridian Street North, when the unnamed officer pulled Hamlet over. During the traffic stop, the officer go out of his vehicle and then the physcial confrontation occurred.

Hamlet reportedly tased the officer, which then led to the officer discharging his firearm, shooting Hamlet.

Hamlet was then transported to Huntsville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where he was treated and then released. Hamlet was then booked into the Huntsville Metro County Jail for 2nd degree assault of a police officer.

The officer received minor injuries during the incident and was treated on the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Per Huntsville Police Department policy, a shooting review board will be convened within the next two weeks. The officer has been placed on administrative duty until the conclusion of the review process.
