Students practice emergency responding in mass casualty training drill

Nursing and EMS students at Calhoun Community College got practice responding to a mass casualty situation through a mock crime Thursday.

At first glance, it looked like a mass shooting just happened at Calhoun Community College, but it was only a mock crime.

A mass casualty training drill was held Thursday morning where nursing and EMS students got the chance to practice responding in a situation involving mass casualties.

“Walking through a scene like that is pretty chaotic. Being able to take your time, breath through it and not get too excited, and work through the problem,” said James Kincade, a paramedic student who took part in the drill. “Basically we’re looking at the person itself to see if they’re able to get up and walk away from that scene, and if they are, get them to a safer area.”

Students posed as victims, with fake wounds and fake blood to help make the drill more life like.

In the past, mock drills have included a bomb threat, chemical explosion, and a bus crash.
