Shepherd’s Cove Hospice provides care to patients in nine Alabama counties and needs volunteers, especially in Marshall, DeKalb, and Etowah Counties.

Direct patient care volunteers to provide companionship, respite, and assistance to patients and caregivers. No specialized skills are required, and volunteers are trained to allow them to provide the best service and care possible.

Duties could include making special deliveries to patients, taking patients and caregivers to appointments or on errands, reading or talking with patients, providing music, assisting with basic lawn care, or other tasks depending on patient needs an volunteer skills.

“Anytime you’re given an end-of-life kind of scenario it is a difficult time, but all of us are on an end-of-life journey. It’s just that some of us have been given news that means our journey is coming to an end sooner than we thought. So we want to walk the journey with people, nobody should have to walk a difficult journey alone,” said Chief Relations Officer Beth Ann Parnell.

The facility is also looking for bilingual volunteers to help with the Spanish speaking patients.

“Sometimes it’s very difficult to understand if it’s not your native language and so anybody that is bilingual could offer to volunteer just as a translator which also a gifted service we could use,” Parnell said.
