The Scottsboro Police Department says over the last six months, the city has had a rash of burglaries and thefts at local storage unit businesses.

The detectives working the case were able to develop a suspect, Jason Gabriel Shavers, but due to the lack of evidence at the time were unable to charge him.

Detective Lieutenant Erik Dohring says on April 26th, the Ider Police Department caught Shavers of Flat Rock in the act of burglary and theft at one of their local storage unit businesses.

On April 29th, detectives with the Scottsboro Police Department learned Shavers had been arrested and was being housed in the DeKalb County Jail.

The next day, Scottsboro Police Department detectives went to the DeKalb County Jail and interviewed Shavers. Detectives then obtained a search warrant for his home. The Jackson County and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Departments assisted in executing the search warrant.

Dohring says thousands of dollars worth of stolen property have been recovered. The Scottsboro Police Department has been able to return some of the property to its owners.

The Scottsboro Police Department is asking if there are any victims out there that have had property stolen out of a storage unit within the last six months to contact Detective Ryan Putman at 256-574-4468 ext. 339 and give him a description of your property so he can see if it has been recovered.

Detectives are working on filing criminal charges on Shavers who is currently incarcerated in the DeKalb County Jail on other charges.
