Reserve officer rescues teen from house fire

A City of Athens employee is being called a hero tonight for saving a teenage boy from a burning home.

Clifton Kirby is being honored as a hero after saving an Athens teen from a house fire Wednesday morning. Kirby is a building inspector and reserve police officer for Athens. The Athens Fire Chief says this morning Kirby was driving on Nick Davis Road when he saw a garage on fire. He knocked on the door of the home and no one answered. That’s when he knocked out a window. The teenager was asleep in the basement and was brought to safety. Luckily, no one was injured, but the home was destroyed. The cause is under investigation. A neighbor told WZDX it was a miracle that the officer saw the fire in time and was able to spring into action to help.
