Former Rep. John Dingell dies at 92

The longest-serving member of congress, John Dingell, has passed away at the age of 92. He left congress in 2014 after 59 years of service.

The longest-servinc member of congress, John Dingell, has passed away at the age of 92. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John David Dingell, Jr., former Michigan Congressman and longest-serving member of the United States Congress,” the office of his wife, Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Michigan, said in a statement.

Former Rep. Dingell originally became a member of congress in 1955 after his father passed away, vacating the seat. Dingell would then be re-elected 29 more times before choosing not to run again in 2014. The seat remained within the family as his wife Debbie took over the seat and holds it today. The combined service of the three totals nearly 86 years in congress.

Dingell officially served in the House of Representatives for 59 years and 22 days. He served with 11 presidents and cast 28,551 votes. Dingell helped sponsor the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and was one of the original authors of the Affordable Care Act. 

In 2014 Former President Obama awarded Dingell with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. 

A devout Catholic, funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dearborn, MI. Former Rep. Dingell will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
