Monrovia Elementary Read-A-Thon promotes literacy

Monrovia Elementary School is encouraging literacy among students through a week of reading incentives during Dr. Seuss Reading Week.

Students at Monrovia Elementary School are on a roll with reading this week. Their goal is for the school to read 200,000 minutes this week. As of Thursday afternoon, students as a whole have read more than 77,000 minutes.

Class Thursday morning kicked off with a special guest reader, Billy McCullough, a retired lieutenant from the Montgomery Police Department who is now an author.

The purpose of the Read-A-Thon is to encourage a volume of reading among students, which Principal Renee Headen say’s will benefit them academically in every area. “What better time to do this than Dr. Seuss Week?”, said Principal Renee Headen.. “We read to learn. We encourage reading in Pre-K through 5th grade.”

This week, students have kicked off the first 15 minutes of each day with reading, along with reading breaks throughout the day, and guest readers have been coming in to read with the students. Books have even been read to classes via Skype.

“We reach out to parents and friends and families to students to donate money for students that read so much. It’s a Read-A-Thon where they read so many minutes a day. Right now we’re up to 60,000 minutes of reading for the whole school,” said Headen.

This week, they hope to raise enough money to provide at least four ipads per grade for k-third grade. Their goal is $15,000. Click here to donate.
