Meridianville is about to get safer in severe weather, thanks to the installation of two new storm shelters.

According to the Meridianville Volunteer Fire Department, site prep started in March after a grant was secured by the Madison County Commission and District 1 Commissioner Roger Jones.

The shelters are located at the Meridianville Volunteer Fire Dept. at 464 Patterson Lane in Meridianville and while they’re in place, they’re not ready for public use. A representative with the department says that they still need to be connected to power, have generators set up, be secured to the foundation, and meet ADA compliance measures.

The shelters are expected to hold around 96 people each. Plans are being finalized to increase parking in the area around the shelters.

The fire department says that residents should keep an eye on social media for updates and announcements on progress on the shelters.
