It’s National Read a Book Day, and Madison firefighters are teaching kids what to do in a fire by reading them books.
The Madison Fire and Rescue team is now teaching third graders at Madison City Schools the importance of fire safety.
They have a series of 5 workbooks to teach kids how smoke alarms work and how to create their own fire escape plans at home.
Chief Bailey, EMS/Training Captain Gentry, and all of the Madison Fire and Rescue trucks are involved in making sure the program is a success.
A Madison County ninth grade student, Catherine Stang, did all the artwork for the workbooks. Her artwork appears on the cover of all five workbooks.
Captain of Community Risk Reduction for Madison Fire and Rescue, Michael Sedlacek, says they want to empower the kids to be their own fire safety officers in their homes. He also says the workbooks give the information to actually save lives which is something that is really important to them. They want to make sure that their city is safe.
The Madison Fire and Rescue team believe the workbooks will help children know what to do in case of a fire in their homes and urge all parents to work with their children to practice fire safety.
