PHONE SCAM

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a phone scam.

The Sheriff’s Office recently got reports that hackers are using names and phone numbers of law enforcement officers to convince people to give them money.

The hackers will call and tell you to transfer a certain amount of money to avoid jail time for warrants.

Lieutenant Donny Shaw with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office says they will never ask for money over the phone.

“We’re not going to call anybody and tell them they have warrants on them. We’re not going to call anybody and tell them that they’ve missed jury duty, and we will never solicit money from anybody over the phone,” said Shaw.

If you get a call like this, simply hang up. If you think you may have a warrant, call the Madison County Warrants Department or call (877) 846-3425 for more criminal case information.
