Native American culture was celebrated Wednesday morning at the Arsenal for an event hosted by Team Redstone in observance of National American Indian Heritage Month.
“It’s a month about recognizing and observing the contributions of American Indian people,” said Dr. Yvette Running Horse Collin, Oglala Nation Presidential Ambassador and keynote speaker at the event. “I was really happy to be here today and to talk about not just the ways we have benefited the world in the past, but we are alive and well today and the ways that we are going to be able to positively affect the future.”
Dr. Running Horse Collin says the world is in need, and the goal is to help share their knowledge, and work together with the community as a team to be stronger.
“Incorporating our traditional knowledge — our native ways of knowing into the western world today — taking our knowledge and helping in realms such as the sciences, medicine — all different realms — ecology,” she said. “We have deep knowledge in the area, and the world is in need. Many of us want to stand up and help with that. It’s a good time.”
Following Dr. Running Horse Collin’s speech, the Women Warriors did a cultural presentation and folks present had the opportunity to sample Native American cuisine and peruse Native American clothing. Artisans from several American Indian Tribes from across Alabama displayed artwork and craft products.
