Locals came together and celebrated Kwanzaa in Huntsville.

Sunday afternoon, people from across north Alabama met at Zenzele Consignment shop on University drive to discuss economic growth and independence– one of the main ideas of the principle that is celebrated during the 4th day of Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration starting the day after Christmas, which honors seven principles. All the days have different meanings and they all help promote one idea– Unity.

Kwanzaa is a holiday celebrated by African Americans that pays homage to African roots, independence, and freedom .

Those who celebrate Kwanzaa pay respects to leaders who have passed away, family, elders, and even young members, who have the honor of lighting the candle on each day.

Sunday, locals came together on the 4th day of Kwanzaa– which represents the 4th principle Ujamaa (ooh-Jah-MAH), or “Cooperative economics”.

We spoke with Kobina Bantushango, a member of the African People Socialist Party and Kwanzaa participant. He tells us the information provided on the 4th day, Ujamaa, can be life changing. He adds, “[It gives]the people in the community the ability to be able to advance economically… To be able to see their own economic interests and be able to open up their own businesses and share some of the skills that they have with a community that they can actually profit from.”

Discussions on financial independence, food, music and dance were all a big part of today’s celebration.

Locals also collecting warm clothes for the homeless at each day’s activity.

Kwanzaa will continue until January 1st. On the final day, Imani (ee-mah-nee) or “faith”, participants will spend time with family and close out the celebration.
