Volunteers needed at Community Free Dental Clinic

While the need for dental care is going up during the pandemic, the amount of volunteers is going down.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — The pandemic is creating challenges for the Community Free Dental Clinic in Huntsville.

The clinic offers free extractions to poverty-level adults. While the need for dental care in North Alabama is going up during the pandemic, the amount of their volunteers is going down.

Many of their regular volunteers are not coming in anymore out of fear of COVID-19. Since the clinic re-opened in July, they have only had four volunteer dentists come in and work, and those volunteers can only work so many hours.

Community Free Dental Clinic Executive Director, Julia Nabors, said, "If every dentist in Huntsville gave us just 4 hours in 2021, we would be open twice as many hours as we were able to be open in 2019, so just a little bit of time a year could help the clinic so much and help so many people."

The Community Free Dental Clinic is the only free clinic in North Alabama. They are working to hire on a part time dentist, but they need donations to help fund that.
