"We feel violated" | Huntsville neighbors, council member, oppose contractor plans to build two homes on one lot

One Huntsville councilman and neighbors fight to stop the building of two homes on single home lot.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Homeowners and one Huntsville city council member are concerned with the proposal to build two homes in a single neighborhood with 600 homes.

District 4 Councilmember Bill Kling said he thinks the contractor's motivation to build on the lot on Wingate Ave. is solely to make money.

He also said that this build will not fit the style of the neighborhood, which is why homeowners are upset.

"It's a beautiful well-established neighborhood people put a lot of time to yard work to make their appearance look real good and here we would have someone coming in they are not a resident of the neighborhood basically an investor and they would be breaking all the rules," said Kling.

Kling is also concerned that the builder is not following the covenants that all homeowners had to follow when building their home.

According to the covenant, lots must be 85 feet in width and 11,900 square feet in area.

The blueprint plans for the new development read 65 feet in width and under 9,000 square feet for each home.

Neighbors are upset that only some neighbors were notified about the plan and not all. Some say they only had a few days to learn about the decision.

Homeowner, Jill Murray, says she wishes the contractor communicated with the neighbors so he/she could see how this build would affect the community they have already created.

"The one thing I was a little disheartened by was literally last Friday was the first time I heard about the split for the new subdivision. With only living a couple of houses up, that seems unusual maybe someone would want to come to talk to me considering we are a family," said Murray

The decision on whether this plan will be approved or not will be made at the Huntsville Planning Commission meeting at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 22.

Kling and homeowners say they will be at the meeting to oppose the approval of this development.
