Eating healthy can seem more expensive than eating junk food, but there are tricks you can use at the grocery store to get more bang for your buck.
Growing your own produce is one of the best ways to get food for cheap, but if you don’t have a green thumb, get familiar with the produce section at your local grocery store.
Produce that is in season is typically cheaper because it doesn’t have to be transported as far. If you’re afraid your veggies will go bad before you can eat them, buy frozen vegetables. They last longer and still have plenty of nutritional value.
Registered dietitian and nutritionist, Chelsea Edwards, says things like pasta are great.
“They have some protein in them. They have carbohydrates. Our brain requires 130 grams of carbohydrates a day. That doesn’t factor in movement. That’s just our brain,” said Edwards.
Buying cuts of meat that cost less can save you money, as well as simply eating less of it. Replace meat with other proteins like beans, eggs, and seeds.
“Buying meat and fish when they’re on sale, and then incorporating those a few nights a week, but also eating plant-based a few nights a week because that does save a lot of money. And looking at you can get protein from plants as well, so you’re not really missing out by not having meat daily,” said Edwards.
Buy in bulk. Whole foods like brown rice, dry beans, and oats will last a while in the pantry and can sometimes save you double.
Plan out your meals. Write down every ingredient you’ll need that week. Take that list to the store, and stick to it.
Don’t forget about coupons. There are countless online and in store. Be careful, though. Don’t clip the coupons for junk food. Sort out the healthy ones and use those.
