People avoiding hospitals due to coronavirus pandemic

Health officials say people are avoiding trips to the hospital even when they need essential care.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Health officials say people are avoiding trips to the hospital even when they need essential care.

They say they're taking precautions and that people shouldn't be afraid to get the care they need. Local hospitals are deep cleaning and restricting visitors.

HEMSI says they're wearing PPE and decontaminating ambulances.

As patients come in to the hospitals, they are being screened and separated.

Don Webster with HEMSI said, "If you think you're having some kind of medical emergency, don't let the COVID keep you from seeking medical attention. You don't want to die at home from suffering from a heart attack or a stroke or an overdose or something like that."

Hospitals are also practicing social distancing in waiting rooms.
