Non-essential businesses eager to reopen

Non-essential businesses in Alabama hope to get the go ahead from Governor Kay Ivey to reopen this Friday.

With Alabama's current stay at stay-at-home order set to expire Thursday, local businesses are figuring out what they will do if they can operate again.

Michael Woodard, owner of True South Boutique, said, "We've downloaded all the instructions on how to be safe, what to do, the six foot spacing at the register, we have all the cleaning supplies, everything."

Small businesses deemed non-essential have been hit hard by the pandemic, and many of them are eager to open their doors.

True South Boutique in Guntersville opened up in March and had to close their doors less than a month later. They've been going live on Facebook trying to stay afloat.

"We get down here, we get open, get hit with this coronavirus scare, everybody's shut down. Sales have went in half the first week, the next week, they were basically non-existent, so two weeks open and we're dead," said Michael Woodard.

Beverly Norrell with Classic Touch Hair Salon, along with other cosmetologists, hasn't been able to work at all. She says she's ready to get back to work even though it may be a little different.

"Our customers, I'm sure they'll probably have to wear masks, so it's going to be a challenge with doing colors and especially mens cuts around their ears and stuff," said Norrell.

Right now, there are still no clear guidelines on exactly how and when non-essential businesses in Alabama will open back up. Many hope they'll get the go ahead this Friday.

Michelle Woodard, owner of True South Boutique, said, "We've had so many people call and ask when are you going to be open, can I come shop, you know, can you open your store so I can come shop?"

"I actually already have some appointments down on Friday, and I'm pretty booked Friday and Saturday if we get to go back," said Norrell.

Tuesday morning, Governor Kay Ivey is expected to announce a plan for reopening Alabama businesses. You can watch Governor Ivey's press conference live at 11:00 a.m. on the rocketcitynow.com website and our WZDX Facebook page.
