Madrid Mayor: ‘Don’t stay home and be unsafe’

Madrid Mayor Elaine Williams is urging citizens to seek shelter at the Madrid Town Hall if they need it.

Madrid Mayor Elaine Williams is urging citizens to seek shelter at the Madrid Town Hall if they need it.

In an interview with guest reporter Brittany Lewis, she warned people that things will be tough and not to underestimate the storm.

“Please, don’t stay home,” Williams said. “Come down here if you can get here. If you need a ride, please call down here: 677-3435. I’ll come get you. Just give me a call.”

The Madrid Town Hall is fully fitted with a generator and food and is taking care of citizens who need medical care.

Such care means the world for citizens like Jimmy Peacock.

“We’ve always been taken care of here,” Jimmy said.

Jimmy lives off of an oxygen tank 24/7 and lives in a mobile home. When he heard a tree limb hit his trailer, he knew had to go.

“Ms. Elaine called the house, and I told her ‘yeah, I’m ready to go,'” he said. “She brought my medicine and all with me.”

Williams also invited anyone who wanted to be around their community to head to the town hall to weather the storm together.

“We’ve got some coffee brewing and snacks, and if you would like to come and be with the community, just come on,” Williams said.
