Alabama A&M, AshaKiran partner for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

AshaKiran provides support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month and AshaKiran, a local organization that works with victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, is spreading the word about the resources available in the Rocket City.

"Alabama A&M was so gracious to let us set up on their Quad today, this sunny Wednesday, and we are doing an activity to raise awareness for domestic violence because this is domestic violence awareness month," said AshaKiran representative Emily Howard.

"Months like this are so important that we can call attention and raise awareness to these kind of issues that are kept in darkness because people don't want to talk about them."

Representatives from the group set up tents on the quad of Alabama A&M University and spoke with students about the options that they have if they ever find themselves in a tough situation.

The students were thrilled to learn of so many resources close by.

"To any of our students that are here that have faced domestic violence, you have a resource here on campus and we want you to come forward," student Austin Smith said. "We want you to be able to share your story, we want to be able to help you. We have therapy and all of the resources you need to recover from that trauma."

AshaKiran provides counseling, education, and a safe space for victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse. If you're in need of help, visit their office at 701 Andrew Jackson Way NE. Click here to learn more about the organization and their services in the Huntsville area.
