Limestone County Sheriff's hosts luncheon to honor telecommunicators, dispatchers

It's part of "National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week".

ATHENS, Ala. — There's a saying "not all heroes wear capes". Some work behind the scene, which is why Limestone County honored those who pick up the phone when 911 calls come in.

The Limestone County Sheriff's Office hosted a "Telecommunicator Appreciation Luncheon" Tuesday.

"People don't realize, just that live voice. It diffuses so many situations. If you're in a panic and an emergency, just to have someone to talk to. You know it calms you down, says Limestone County Commission Chairman, Collin Daly.

It's part of "National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week". Every year during the second week of April, the telecommunications personnel in the public safety community, are honored. This week-long event, initially set up in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California, is a time to celebrate and thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public. It is a week that should be set aside so everyone can be made aware of their hard work and dedication.

Agencies including Athens Police Department and Ardmore were presented with proclamations.

County leaders say dispatchers help during stressful situations.

"We're so thankful to have a great group in this county. I didn't realize we had 52 until today. We have 52 telecommunicators in this county and that's coming from Brandon Wallace, our 911 Director and they do a great job out there too, along with our Sheriff's Office and Athens City, Ardmore - you know everybody does a great job in telecommunications," says Daly.

The proclamation presentation is held every year.
