HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A virtual mural going up Thursday evening in downtown Huntsville, in honor of the late civil rights giant, John Lewis. His image, along with the images of others whose lives were taken as a result of police brutality or injustice, dawn the side of City Hall.
Their faces and a message of unity projected into the side of the building.
People also gathered in Big Spring Park for a candlelight vigil.
We met with the lead artist earlier today to talk about why locals decided to put this together.
We spoke with Renzie Wilson, artist of the "Black Lives Matter in Huntsville" piece and local civil rights advocate. Wilson tells us, “Well, John Lewis did say to be bold, be courageous and to be brave. So, in order to get our message of equality and police brutality intolerance-- as well as unity (across),-- we have to do whatever we can do.”
The display was not announced to the public in advance.
Renzie also tells us that he has pitched a “Black Lives Matter” mural proposal to city representatives several times-- and received no assistance in getting it accomplished.
He hopes that will change.
Keep an eye out, the display could be put back up within the next couple of days.
