How to sign up for Affordable Care Act insurance

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The deadline to sign up for insurance through the Affordable Care Act is December 15 to get coverage that begins on January 1, 2022

If you were enrolled for 2021, you will automatically be enrolled for 2022, but you should make any changes to your insurance through December 15.

You can apply online, use a broker/agent or enrollment partner's website, or fill out and mail in an application. You may also be able to find help in your community.

Still need 2021 coverage? Healthcare.gov says you can

  • See if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to a life event, like losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby. You may also be able to enroll now if you got or were approved to get unemployment compensation in 2021. (The Marketplace will follow up with you shortly after you submit your application if you’re eligible for this Special Enrollment Period.) If eligible, you may qualify for help paying for coverage, even if you weren’t eligible in the past. Learn more about lower costs.
  • See if you qualify for Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). You can apply for these programs any time.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reports that in week two of the 2022 Open Enrollment Period, approximately 851,000 people selected individual market plans in the 33 states that utilize the HealthCare.gov platform. During the Open Enrollment Period, to date, more than 1,624,000 people have selected individual market plans on HealthCare.gov.
