City of Florence accepting nominations for Walk of Honor

FLORENCE, Ala — The city of Florence is accepting nominations for the Walk of Honor, located in the River Heritage Park, until 5 p.m. on May 25.

The Walk of Honor highlights Florence and Lauderdale County individuals who have achieved national or international acclaim in various fields.

"This is a means to give honor and perpetuate the name and achievement of deserving individuals, either current or former citizens, through a form of civic recognition," the city said.

The city gave the following examples of areas of national or international accomplishment:

  • Agriculture
  • Art
  • Athletics
  • Business
  • Education
  • Government
  • Humanities
  • Literature
  • Medical
  • Military
  • Music
  • Public Service
  • Religion
  • Science and Technology
  • Etc.

To submit a nomination, visit the city's website and select the "Walk of Honor" listing under the "Happening Now" section. Residents can also pick up a nomination packet from the mayor's office, located at 102 South Court Street, Suite 200.

Completed nominations can be submitted digitally by emailing them to MayorBetterton@florenceal.org or by dropping them off at the mayor's office.

Once eligible inductees are chosen, a ceremony will be held in their honor on a date to be determined.

Also in Florence:

The Better Business Bureau of North Alabama is hosting a "Shred Day" in Florence on April 23 to provide residents an opportunity to safely dispose of sensitive documents.

This free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Florence-Lauderdale Coliseum, located at 702 Veterans Drive.

The event will feature two document shredding trucks on site. Participants are limited to three bags or boxes per vehicle. Only paper documents will be accepted. Participants are asked to remove all other materials.

The event will be held as a drive-thru in which drivers remain in their vehicles to assist social distancing efforts.
