FLORENCE, Ala. — The City of Florence is updating its holiday celebration by changing its traditional Christmas parade to a Parade of Lights. Visitors can enjoy holiday light displays from the safety of their cars.

The Downtown Florence Alliance will host the 2020 Christmas Parade of Lights, presented by Bank Independent, on Dec. 10 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The city says spectators can drive through Tennessee and Court Streets to view spectacular holiday light displays and "float" entries parked along the parade route.

The new format will combine social distancing and holiday cheer. The Parade of Lights will begin on Tennessee Street, and police will guide guests down Tennessee Street to turn right on Court Street. Santa & Mrs. Claus will be featured as the finale of the parade at the intersection of Court and Tuscaloosa. Background music for the full parade experience will be provided by Big River Broadcasting on WQLT-FM 107.3.

Other cities are also creating new traditions this year.

Huntsville cancelled its Christmas Parade, citing COVID-19 concerns. Instead, the city will host a Christmas Fireworks Spectacular at the Joe Davis Stadium parking lot. The city's Tinsel Trail in Big Spring Park continues, as well as events at Bridge Street Town Center.

The City of Madison replaces its Christmas parade with several holiday events, including walking tours of historic homes, a Polar Express Christmas Tree Trail, and the 2nd Annual Christmas Capers, featuring a "chicken toss".
