Food drive backs up traffic on Celtic Drive

The Farmers to Families food drive began at 9:30 am in Madison, but people were lined up hours before to get a food box.

MADISON, Ala. — The Farmers to Families Food Drive backed up traffic for a few hours Monday morning.

Cars sat in stand still traffic on Celtic Drive as volunteers rushed to distribute food boxes during the drive-thru food drive at the Madison City Stadium.

The food drive began at 9:30 am, but people were lined up hours before to get their box.

Volunteers say the traffic shows just how big the need is right now.

Pastor of Daystar Church in Madison, Eli Brooks, said, "It's just a great thing for us to be able to do, to just bring some encouragement and help to people that are working so hard right now during the pandemic and maybe not even able to work right now, but they are able to get a little help."

Volunteers with Daystar Church, Madison City Schools, and Huntsville Police worked together to pass out the boxes.

Daystar Church is heading up the food drive. They are giving out 1,200 boxes full of 22 pounds of fresh meat, produce, and dairy products.

They will be distributing the food boxes from the Farmers to Families Food Program every Monday starting at 9:30 am until the supply runs out.

The food drives will be held at the Madison City Stadium located at 211 Celtic Drive. They hope to hold the food drives throughout February.

The food drive is possible thanks to $4 billion in CARES Act funding used to buy fresh food from farmers that was going to go to waste and give it to people in need.

They say anyone can drive through and get a box. No proof of need is required.

Keep up with distribution days on the Daystar Church Facebook page.
