UPDATE: Coroner identifies person killed in trench collapse accident on Jeff Road

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Update: 

Madison County Coroner Dr. Tyler Berryhill reports the person who died in the accident was identified as Armando Aviles of Huntsville. He was a worker at the site during the incident.  

January 15: 

Fire Marshal Dan Wilkerson reports that there is one fatality at the scene of a construction accident in Huntsville. 

According to Fire Marshal Dan Wilkerson, Huntsville Fire & Rescue responded to a trench collapse at a construction site near 444 Jeff Road. The construction workers were working in an 8’x6’ wide trench when the walls of the trench collapsed. Huntsville Fire & Rescue’s Technical Rescue Team responded and used specialized equipment and techniques to safely recover the victim, determined to be deceased on arrival. from the unstable trench. Huntsville, Madison and Monrovia Fire departments responded, along with HEMSI and HPD.

According to Madison County coroner Dr. Tyler Berryhill, the cause of death was due to traumatic asphyxiation as the result of compression from the substantial weight of the sidewall. The investigation is ongoing at this time. 

Fire Marshal Dan Wilkerson said that seven units responded to a call of a trench collapse with one person trapped.
