HILLSBORO, Ala. — Investigators confirmed a double drowning in the Lawrence County community of Hillsboro late Sunday evening.
The incident happened around 4 p.m. in the 5100 block of County Road 222, according to Lawrence County Chief Deputy Brian Covington.
According to witnesses, a 17-year-old boy went into a pond after a dog that appeared to be in distress in the water. A man believed to be the teen's uncle went after and retrieved the boy, bringing him back to land.
The man reportedly went under the water shortly after and failed to come back up. The teen, according to Covington, then went back into the water, and didn't resurface.
A 15-year-old relative tried to assist, but family reportedly held him back.
No names have been released by officials, pending further investigation.
Covington said Morgan County Rescue Squad's dive team assisted in the recovery effort.
The scene is about 38 miles southwest of downtown Huntsville by way of I-565.
