Decatur murder suspect in custody, charged with capital murder, police say

DECATUR, Ala. — UPDATE: Mark Anthony Stephens, Jr., 19, was taken into custody and charged with capital murder at around 6 p.m. on June 22, according to the Decatur Police Department.

According to Decatur police, Stephens was located with the assistance of the U.S Marshals Gulf Task Force at approximately 6 p.m. at Executive House Apartments, where the killing took place. Stephens surrendered to authorities and was transported to the Decatur Police Department where he was charged with capital murder. He's being held in the Morgan County Correctional Facility without bond.

Officials remind the public that, "The above defendant is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law."

The Decatur Police Department is asking for your help to locate 19-year-old Mark Anthony Stephens Jr.

According to DPD, Stephens has an active capital murder warrant for his arrest in connection to a fatal shooting at Executive House Apts.

Investigators say that on June 20, 2021, Decatur police responded to a shooting call at Executive House Apartments at approximately 8:26 a.m. When they arrived, officers found a man dead from an apparent gunshot wound in the parking lot of the apartment complex. The victim was identified as Viet Truong, 44, of Huntsville.
