Decatur police offer incentives for new officer hires

Department leaders say salaries will range between $49,358 and $75,105 for new recruits.

DECATUR, Ala. — The Decatur Police Department is ramping up its search for new recruits and making sure applicants know the range of benefits they may be eligible for if they join the force. In a flyer being distributed publicly, the department says new recruit salaries will start at $49,358.80. That figure will jump to $51,857.59 upon training and certification, with a top-out salary of $75,105.26.

Starting salary will depend on previous experience and if you're a current officer from more than 100 miles away, you may get relocation money

Other benefits include health insurance, including dental and vision, 13 paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave balances. A take-home vehicle will be provided for officers who live within a 20-mile radius.

The department also offers college tuition reimbursement programs.

An incentive of $5,000 is offered for city employees who refer successful applicants. The bonus will be split into $2,500 payments made after a probationary period and after the first year of employment.
