Decatur Police Explorer program accepting applications

Teens 14-17 can get an up-close look at a career in law enforcement.

DECATUR, Ala. — Teens 14-17 in and near Decatur have the opportunity to get an up-close look at a career in law enforcement. The Decatur Police Department is accepting applications for its Explorer Program.

The Decatur Police Dept. says that members of the Explorer Program will be provided with a uniform at no cost. The curriculum for the program includes:

Overview of the Decatur Police Department, including:

· Basic Criminal Law

· Traffic Control

· Officer Survival

· Patrol Procedures

· Radio Procedures

Explorers do not need to miss school to complete the program. Dates are June 14 through June 24. Classes will be Monday-Thursday from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The Explorer Program website says members of the Explorer Program are expected to attend regular meetings that consist of administrative updates, the scheduling of upcoming events, and routine training.

Due to the nature of the work, training is very formal and disciplined.

Participants must strive to achieve at least an 80% average in all academics while in the Explorer Program.

The program provided participants with an interest in a career in law enforcement who wish to gain personal awareness of the criminal justice system through training, hands-on experiences, and other activities.

If participants show a respect for their role in the Explorer Program and successfully complete the above requirements, they will have opportunities to help with city events.

Members of the Explorer Program will be provided with a uniform at no cost.

Applications and releases for the Explorer Program are available at the front desk of the police department and online.

All forms must be completed and submitted to the front desk by Friday, May 14, 2021.
