Garland Slayton is 90 years old. And he’s fully prepared to answer the call for help.

“I thought it was a good opportunity for me to come out and do what I could to help,” says Slayton.

Working alongside about two hundred other volunteers, Garland is helping to fill buckets, called “blessing buckets”, with much needed supplies.

“There’s 2 or 3 along the line that I’m on. I try to keep up with them. It’s kind of rushing me at times, but it’s keeping the flow going,” says Slayton.

Keeping the flow going so that these supplies will get out to those who may be impacted by Hurricane Florence. The Blessing Buckets program is organized by the faith-based non profit group, God’s Pit Crew.

“What really gets me, is God knew this storm was coming before it came and he brought all these people here to make these buckets for somebody, they don’t even know they’re going to be impacted,” says Julie Burnett, Blessing Buckets program director.

By the time the volunteers are finished,  two thousand blessing buckets will be filled to the brim with 24 items.

“I know I have and several other people have been praying over these, that they’ll feel that love when they open these,” says Dylan Haley, a 17-year-old volunteer.

The buckets will first go to those in need locally, before being distributed to other areas. So far this year, a total of eight thousand buckets have gone to assist those affected by crisis situations.

“I hope the people realize when they get it that other people love them and want to help them out and do what they can to make life better for them,” says Slayton.

The preparation of the blessing buckets is truly a labor of love.

God’s Pit Crew is still looking for donations, including water and other relief supplies. The group is also looking for more volunteers.
