Suspected medical emergency leads to crash, power outages

Outage map indicated 201-1300 Huntsville Utilities customers lost power after the crash.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville police believe a medical emergency resulted in a crash Saturday afternoon that caused traffic headaches on University Drive and a power outage in northwest Huntsville. The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of University and Waddell Dr.

Huntsville Utilities confirmed the outage on social media; their online outage map suggests between 201-1300 customers were affected; officials said a majority of affected customers had been reconnected by 4 p.m., except in the immediate area of the crash.

The area impacted spanned from Oakwood Ave. south to Explorer Blvd and from Jeff Rd east to Research Park Blvd.

Police were directing traffic in the immediate aftermath of the crash. The wreck was cleared by 4 p.m. Expect there to be lingering impacts as work continues to repair the damage caused.

Officers say the driver suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
